Dr Wasim Ahmed is a general practitioner, translator and writer based in London. Born in the part of Kashmir administered by Pakistan, he came to the United Kingdom as a child, speaking Pahari at home and having recently learnt to read and write Urdu. He later studied medicine at Imperial College London and has devoted his entire working life to the National Health Service.

His interest in history, language and shared cultural heritage led him to Punjabi Sufi poetry, particularly the work of Baba Bulleh Shah. He has published two books of English translations that bring Bulleh Shah’s teachings of love, humanity and communal harmony to wider audiences. Dr Ahmed is also interested in the continuing consequences of Partition and advocates greater understanding of both Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi across Punjab. He is currently compiling a new volume of Bulleh Shah translations.
