The Story of the Komagata Maru: Guru Nanak Jahaaz

A first of its kind picture story book about the story of the Komagata Maru/Guru Nanak Jahaaz.  The Komagata Maru/Guru Nanak Jahaaz is a dark part of Canadian history that is often excluded from education curriculums. However, this story is significant, especially in light of rising alt right extremism, hate and racism against racialised individuals across the globe. Although it has been 111 years since this tragic incident occurred, this event remains forever etched on the minds of Sikhs as a stark reminder of the injustice and terror faced by their ancestors as a result of racial, ethnic and religious discrimination.

This children’s picture book is a wonderful resource for educators and learners across school systems that not only affirms Sikh identities and their rich history in Canada, but also promotes decolonial praxis; it is a counter story about hope, resistance and solidarity.

Written by Hardeep Kaur Shergill, complete with full colour double-spread illustration by Brazil based illustrator Ana Nicolau, this book will be a fantastic resource for young persons aged 11+ as well as parents, caregivers and schools.
